TEN HERITAGE AND HEIRLOOM CHILLIES TO GROW FOR MAXIMUM FLAVOUR

1. PUBESCENS ROCOTTO

If there was only one chilli I could grow this would be the one.  Native to Bolivia this species of chilli has beautiful purple flowers and huge yields of hot and spicy plum-sized deep red fruit.  This chilli grows very well in low temperatures and make a beautiful house plant with fresh chillies available from July until February or March.  Cut back hard in spring, this chilli will grow for many years.  Reliable, delicious and unique.

2. SULAWESI

I discovered this glorious, hot and fruity chilli on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi more than twenty years ago.  Very heavy crops of long cayenne type of the species C. annuum.  After so many years growing this chilli I get early reliable crops which will grow well in a sunny and sheltered spot outside as well as in the greenhouse.  A great chilli to dry and grind into hot chilli powder

3. MATHANIA

Believed to be extinct, I discovered this glorious chilli on a remote farm in the Mathania region of southern Rajasthan.  Highly prized in India and especially Rajasthan for its fine culinary qualities the large cayenne type are deeply aromatic and fruity with some heat.  A true gourmet chilli and incredibly rare.

4. LEMON DROP

This richly colourful hot and spicy pepper is of the species C. chinense.  Very good crops throughout the summer and autumn on attractive plants.  Fruits freeze well
