AUBERGINE

BLACK RAVEN

This wonderful aubergine has ben bred by Søren Holt, who lives in Denmark and is a keen open source breeder.  You can read the story of how this beautiful vegetable came into this world in my book The Accidental Seed Heroes.

What makes this aubergine especially important to grow is that Søren bred it to thrive outside.  It is very genetically diverse with fruits long and slender like a misshapen Havana cigar and others a little plumper.  Grows over a long season.

Søren  is keen for growers to enjoy and also save seeds themselves in order to create a diverse number of landraces that will thrive in different climates and growing conditions.

VISHWNATH

This is a traditional or Dhesi variety bred organically in India by Kudrat Seeds.  I first ate them in Rajasthan and they are delicious.  A farmer gave me a packet of seed and I have saved from that first crop.  Benefits from a long season and best eaten when the size in this photo. Grow in a greenhouse or poly tunnel for best results.  Fantastic in curries!
